A graduate Nuclear Engineering specialist from the French National Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology (INSTN), Frédéric Varaine is recognized as one of France’s leading experts in sodium-cooled fast reactor technology.
After holding several management positions within the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and leading major advanced reactor programs, including the ASTRID project, he founded OTRERA New Energy in 2024.
Through OTRERA, he is driving the development of a new generation of fast reactors combining economic competitiveness, industrial scalability, and fuel cycle closure.
Under his leadership, OTRERA is developing a modular fast reactor designed to utilize existing nuclear materials while providing competitive, carbon-free energy for industrial applications and power grids.
As President and Founder, he leads the company’s strategy, development, and partnerships, with the ambition of establishing a leading European industrial player in advanced nuclear technologies.
Convinced that fast reactors are a key enabler of energy sovereignty, industrial decarbonization, and the sustainable use of nuclear resources, he is committed to positioning OTRERA as a reference company in the field of advanced nuclear energy.
