Otrera, Winner of the “Innovative Nuclear Reactors” Call for Projects, Begins the Development of its SMR Reactor

Nov 27, 2023 | Press Release

Paris, November 27, 2023. The French government has set as its primary objective, within the framework of the France 2030 plan, to position France as a leader in the creation and development of innovative and autonomous companies. These companies would focus on projects that encourage transitions towards areas such as ecology, energy, digital technology, and food, and contribute to the decarbonization of the economy and lifestyles.

Otrera is a company dedicated to innovation in the field of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and celebrates a decisive milestone in its journey to rethink nuclear energy.

Founded by Frédéric Varaine, project manager for ASTRID (2016-2019), and Nicole Fortunet, an expert in the techno-economics of nuclear reactors, the company has been selected among the winners of the “Innovative Nuclear Reactors” call for projects launched by the Public Investment Bank (BPI).

Frédéric Varaine comments on this decision:

“Since its inception, our company OTRERA has set ambitious goals. It has undertaken to rethink nuclear energy through a unique SMR approach, focused on a new and high-performance architecture. We welcome this decisive new step with Otrera’s selection in the ‘innovative nuclear reactors’ call for projects.”

Nicole Fortunet adds:

Today, we can get to work on building the nuclear reactors of tomorrow. The financial pillars of the project are now solid, and it is with great pride that we announce the start of design work for our first SMR .”

This advancement underscores our commitment to safe and competitive nuclear power. It also confirms our contribution to shaping a more promising and sustainable global energy future.

This call for tenders follows an initial round of discussions that brought together interested industrialists and funds. The announcement of partnerships will take place in the coming weeks.
